Panel A1 - "Technologies for Sustainable Development"

Alan McNeil Jackson, CTO at Aptivate

Alan's message is simple - empowerment through participation. Participation is key to designing any IT system; it's also the greatest benefit created by IT. He is a director and founding member of Aptivate, a not-for-profit organisation that provides IT services to the international development community. As CTO he directs the programmes that give Aptivate the world-leading reputation it enjoys. Alan came to ICT4D through low bandwidth communications and the development of the Loband web filtering service. He honed Aptivate's participatory approach working with NGOs, the UN and communities across Africa. From improving online journal access for academics in developing countries to deploying low-power thin client networks in rural Zambia for teaching young school leaving women, Alan's experience ranges from the grassroots to the governmental level.

Ian Steed, Managing Director at Humanitarian Centre

Ian Steed currently manages the Humanitarian Centre, a hub to support collaboration and innovation in Cambridge humanitarian action. He has worked in a range of roles in humanitarian organisations including for the German Red Cross and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. He also carries out management consultancy in the sector.

Ken Banks, Founder of Kiwanja.net

Ken, founder of kiwanja.net, devotes himself to the application of mobile technology for positive social and environmental change in the developing world, and has spent the last 15 years working on projects in Africa. Recently, his research resulted in the development of FrontlineSMS, a field communication system designed to empower grassroots non-profit organisations. Ken graduated from Sussex University with honours in Social Anthropology with Development Studies, and was awarded a Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship in 2006, and named a Pop!Tech Social Innovation Fellow in 2008. Ken's work has been supported by the MacArthur Foundation and Open Society Institute, and he is the current recipient of a grant from the Hewlett Foundation.

Kristin Peterson, Co-Founder and CDO of Inveneo

Kristin is the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Inveneo. Kristin has been responsible for strategy, partnership and support development since Inveneo’s inception. She has led Inveneo’s efforts to deliver education, healthcare, economic development and relief projects in more than 14 Sub-Saharan African countries, touching the lives of over 400,000 people with life-impacting information and communications technologies. Prior to Inveneo Kristin was VP Marketing an enterprise IP services technology start-up, and she founded Velocity Consulting, an organization that provided go-to-market guidance to a range of networking, wireless, and VoIP tech start-ups. Before Velocity, she was Executive Director, Business Development at GoRemote through IPO. She also held various roles in international product management and market development for AT&T. She has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from NMSU and a M.B.A in International Marketing from Pepperdine University.

Nick Hughes, Head of Social Enterprise Team at Vodafone

Nick heads up the international mobile payments business unit at Vodafone Group, a team created to build on the success of M-PESA – Kenya’s first mobile payment system that has seen significant customer uptake over its first two years in operation (+5m subscribers). Nick started the M-PESA concept in 2004 through venture funding made available by the UK Government. The system is now deployed in multiple markets and with a range of partners. The functionality is now extended beyond simple person-to-person money transfer services, moving towards broader m-commerce opportunities. This includes micro-credit, salary and bill payment as well as cross border remittances. Nick joined Vodafone in 2001 from the large energy company BP, where he worked on international projects (including a prototype emissions trading system). Nick has PhD in ApScience and an MBA from London Business School.

Panel A2 - "Innovation in Post-Genomic Era"

David Bentley, VP and Chief Scientist at Illumina Inc.

David is Vice President and Chief Scientist at Illumina Inc., developing new DNA sequencing technology for fast, accurate sequencing of complex genomes. His research interests include the study of Human Sequence Variation and its impact on Health and Disease. He was previously at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. As a founding Member of the Board of Management and Head of Human Genetics, he played leading roles in the Human Genome Project, The SNP Consortium and the International HapMap Project.

David Tapolczay, CEO of MRC Technology

David is the Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Research Council Technology Group (MRCT). He has 21 years of experience in R&D management; his past roles include joint worldwide head of chemistry for Zeneca agrochemicals and VP of Technology Development for GSK pharmaceuticals. He was responsible for the rapid growth of Cambridge Discovery Chemistry, following which David was VP of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Millennium Pharmaceuticals. Subsequently, he was a founder of Pharmorphix Ltd and has also been involved with the start up of 5 companies, one of which has been AIM listed. David has been a visiting Professor at Sussex University and visiting lecturer at Nottingham, Reading and Durham Universities.

Geoff Johnston, Director of Molecular Medicine at Pfizer

Geoff joined Pfizer in 1991 as the head of Gene Cloning within the Molecular Genetics Department. He led the Genetic Technologies group within Discovery from 1996 to 2004 and subsequently joined Clinical Pharmacogenomics. After Clinical Pharmacogenomics became part of Molecular Medicine, Geoff became the Molecular Medicine Lead covering genomics for the Research Units at Pfizer’s Sandwich Research Campus in Kent, one of the world’s largest R&D centres and the site of discovery of Viagra and HIV-drug Selzentry. Geoff is a co-chair of the Pfizer's internal Hepatic Injury Council.

Tim Haines, Partner at Abingworth

Tim has more than 25 years of international management experience in the life sciences industry. Before joining Abingworth in 2005, he was Chief Executive of the Abingworth portfolio company, Astex Therapeutics. Tim was with Astex for more than five years and was instrumental in establishing it as one of the leading UK biotechnology companies. Previously, Tim was Chief Executive of two divisions of the publicly-listed medical technology company, Datascope Corp. Prior to Datascope, he held a number of other senior management positions in the US and Europe, including CEO of Thackray Inc and General Manager Baxter UK. Tim has a BSc from Exeter University and an MBA from INSEAD.

Tim Hubbard, Head of Informatics at Welcomme Trust Sanger Institute

Tim is the Head of Informatics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. His main scientific interests concern the analysis of vertebrate genome sequences, particularly the identification of gene sequences and the sequence elements that regulate them. After joining the Sanger Institute in 1997, he became deeply involved in the institute's one third contribution to the sequencing of the human genome. Tim is significantly engaged in international policy discussions around innovation, intellectual property and public health and has spoken at and taken part in a wide range of government, NGO and industry workshops and meetings, hosted among others by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Aventis, Medicins San Frontiers, the Rockefeller Foundation and the European Commission.

Robert James, Partner at DFJ Esprit

Robert manages DFJEsprit’s portfolio of healthcare and medical technology investments. Since joining Prelude Ventures in 1998, he has been involved in a number of successful transactions including the exits from Oxford Biomedica and DNA Research Innovations. Rob manages DFJEsprit’s investments in Sciona, Oxford Immunotec, KiadisPharma and De Novo Pharmaceuticals. Prior to his time in venture capital, Robert worked for seven years commercialising cancer therapeutics and diagnostics arising from the research conducted by Cancer Research UK. He was responsible for licensing Temodal to Schering Plough (generating annual sales in excess of $600m) and Trovax to Oxford Biomedica. Rob graduated with a genetics degree from Sheffield University and a biochemistry PhD from the University of London.

Panel B1 - "Zero Carbon Cities"

Amadeo Clavarino, Founder and President of Ambiente Milano

Amedeo Clavarino is the founder and president of Ambiente Milano, a non-profit foundation aimed at improving the urban environment in Milan. In 2005, Ambiente Milano was able to convince the municipality of Milan to introduce the ECOPASS, a congestion charge measure. Ambiente Milano is now committed in proposing efficient solutions to reduce pollution and CO2 emissions, such as a vehicle sharing scheme offering at the same time bicycles, electric bicycles, electric scooters and small electric cars/quadri-cycles. Previously, he developed real estate operations for over 300,000 sqm in particular re-qualifying industrial building complexes. He converted industrial areas into original and attractive creative spaces grouping together those activities whichhave given a significant contribution to the "made in Italy"formula. From 2006 Amedeo is the sole owner of the Maloja Palace Hotel. He graduated from the University of Genova in 1981; later on followed an MBA course at Insead (Fontainebleau) in 1983-1984.

Arne Morteani, Associate of Environmental Technologies Fund

Arne is an Associate with the Environmental Technologies Fund (ETF), which he joined in 2007 shortly after the fund’s inception. Since then he has worked on a number of investments including Perpetuum, Novel Polymer Solutions, and Chemrec. He is a board observer at NovelPolymer Solutions. Prior to joining ETF, Arne worked both in strategy consulting and in technology development. He was a Consultant at The Boston Consulting Group in London, where he focused mainly on strategic due diligence work and covered a wide range of industries including the high-tech, energy, pharmaceutical, consumer goods, and financial service industries. Before BCG, Arne worked as a Research Fellow at Cambridge University where he developed solar cells made from novel organic semiconductors. Arne also co-founded the annual Cambridge Tech Ventures Conference.

David Mackay, Professor ar Department of Physics and writer of "Sustainable Energy: Without the Hot Air"

David studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge then obtained his PhD in Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology. He is now a Professor in the Department of Physics at Cambridge University. His research interests include machine learning, reliable computation and communication with unreliable hardware, and the creation of information-efficient human-computer interfaces. He has just written a free popular book on "Sustainable Energy - without the hot air".

Edward Murphy, Buildings Director at Mott MacDonald Ltd.

Edward is a graduate of London South Bank University with a degree in Building Services Engineering. He has a proven track record in the design and project management of high-profile low-energy buildings, advocating solutions that are low cost as well as being highly sustainable. Edward was the lead building services and sustainability technical advisor for the multi-award winning Vulcan House, Sheffield’s green yet cost-conscious speculative office building for the UK Border Agency. He is currently the project director leading an ambitious approach to sustainability for the £200m Sheffield Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

Peter Guthrie, Head of Centre for Sustainable Development at Department of Engineering

Peter is a Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge. He is focused on the integration of sustainable development into decision making in large infrastructure projects such as regeneration schemes, buildings and mining projects, worldwide. In 1980, he founded RedR - Engineers for Disaster Relief, which is a charity providing qualified and experienced specialists to disasters worldwide. Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a member of the Arup Foundation Advisory Board, and a Vice-President of RedR. He is also a member of the DEFRA Scientific Advisory Council, and serves on the Government’s Advisory Board on the Severn Tidal Power scheme.

Steve Sharratt, CEO of Bio Group Ltd.

Steve is Group Chief Executive of Bio Group, the UK’s largest business of its kind, Steve’s vision is a network of high quality Centres for Recycling and Sustainability, initially across the UK, treating organic waste locally, generating sustainable energy for the local community and reducing emissions in the process. Steve is a member of the Climate Change Board, the Advisory Group to the Climate Change Business Summit hosted by HRH Prince of Wales, Chairman of CBI Eastern Region Council, Chairman of the Prince’s Trust and on an HMRC Advisory Board.

Alastair Mitchell, CEO and Co-Founder at Huddle.Net

Alastair has spent 10 years in the online services industry. During the early years, he helped to build the first online market place for the global food commodities market, which provided marketing, auction and logistics capabilities to companies across Europe, Africa & the Far East. Alastair then moved to dunnhumby, where he led the growth of its web-based marketing intelligence product to £20m in three years. Alastair joined dunnhumby's Strategic Management Board in 2005 to head up the group's Shopping Experience practice, a $60m+ business globally. Alastair graduated with an MSc in Naval Engineering from Southampton University.

Frank Boehnke, General Partner at Wellington Partners

Frank joined pan-European venture capital firm Wellington Partners in January 1998. Ever since, he has focused on the dynamics of the internet and has helped companies like Alando (acquired by eBay) and Ciao! (acquired by Greenfield Online) to impressive success. Based in London, Frank is managing the following investment companies in the high growth areas of Digital Media and Software Services: AdConion, Astaro, EnQii, GameDuell, Proximic, SafeID Solutions, Swoopo, Swyx, Wazap!, and Webme. Prior to joining Wellington Partners, Frank spent eight years in technology investment banking at J.P. Morgan in New York, London and Frankfurt where he advised customers such as IBM, Bertelsmann and Siemens on numerous M&A mandates and helped many technology companies to achieve NASDAQ listings.

Kevin Eyres, MD Europe of LinkedIn

Kevin is focused on developing, leading and delivering the LinkedIn’s strategy and growth initiatives in Europe. Prior to LinkedIn, he was European Managing Director at SideStep, now Kayak Travel. Kevin was previously the General Manager of AltaVista International, prior to the acquisition by Overture, and a Director at Shopping.com. He started his career as an engineer at Compaq Computers where he spent ten years leading development teams during Compaq’s hyper growth phase. Kevin is also Chairman of Spoonfed Media and a member of YPO. He holds a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Texas in San Antonio and has six patents.

Nic Brisbourne, Partner at DFJ Esprit

Nic has been in venture capital since 2000. In that time he has worked in London, Europe and Silicon Valley. His main areas of focus have been software and media. Prior to DFJ Esprit, he was with Reuters Venture Capital. Nic's investment experience includes buy.at (sold to AOL for $125m) and UltraDNS (acquired by Neustar - NYSE NSR). He currently manages DFJ Esprit's investments in Zeus, WAYN and Tribold. Prior to joining Reuters, Nic worked for Operis, a software and services start-up, and Cap Gemini. Nic also authors a blog commenting on the European technology and venture capital markets.

Tim Barker, Sr Director of EMEA Product Marketing at Salesforce.com

Tim is Senior Director of Product Marketing at Salesforce.com. Tim was co-founder of Koral, a SaaS Content Management company, which was acquired by Salesforce.com in 2007. He led the successful integration of Koral into the Force.com platform and launched the application now known as Salesforce Content. Tim has more than 17 years of experience in Product Marketing & Management within the Enterprise software and services sector with companies such as EMC Documentum and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He has founded 3 successful software companies as well as spending time as an Entrepreneur In Residence at Benchmark Capital, where he focused on helping evaluate and create startups. Tim is an accomplished product manager, product marketer, entrepreneur and passionate advocate and spokesperson for Cloud Computing.
