Workshop on Intellectual Property

Grasp the opportunity to learn more about Intellectual Property from top patent attorneys, lawyers and Cambridge Enterprise entrepreneurs by coming along to an expertly paneled workshop organised by The Cambridge University Technology and Enterprise Club (CUTEC) on the 24th April 2008 in the Judge Business School.

The event, arranged in conjunction with attorneys Marks and Clerk and sponsored by this company, 3i and Northrop Grumman, shall consist of a 45 minute panel discussion designed to raise awareness of patents and how specialised attorneys can help commercialise an idea, a 15 minute Q&A session and then a whole hour of networking over wine and snacks.

Speakers Profile

Gareth Williams, Patent Attorney and Partner, Cambridge, Marks & Clerk Patent and Trademark Attorneys

Gareth is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and European Trade Mark Attorney at Marks & Clerk Patent and Trademark Attorneys, a company with over a century’s experience in intellectual property.

He has acted for clients in a variety of fields with particular expertise in patent work in the fields of biotechnology, medical devices, business method inventions and mechanical devices. His practice involves the drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications worldwide, the handling of opposition and appeal work at the European Patent Office, and advice on infringement matters and general intellectual property strategy

Will James, Associate, Marks & Clerk Solicitors

Will is an intellectual property lawyer at Marks & Clerk Solicitors, the associated law firm of Marks & Clerk Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys and a leading niche intellectual property (IP) practice. Specialising in contentious intellectual property matters, Will has worked on a number of patent cases for international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as patent matters involving a variety of other technologies.

In addition, Will has experience of copyright and database right infringement actions and defending interim injunctions in the High Court. Will has also advised well known motor sports and clothing companies on brand protection and trade mark issues as well as a range of commercial and corporate matters including trade mark, patent and know how licensing.

Maher Khaled, Senior Technology Associate, Cambridge Enterprise

Maher Khaled is Senior Technology Associate (Life Sciences) at Cambridge Enterprise. Cambridge Enterprise exists to help University of Cambridge inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs make their ideas and concepts more commercially successful – working with them to licence patentable ideas to new and existing companies at fair and reasonable terms.

Maher has extensive experience in life sciences intellectual property management and law as well as technology transfer, through his work at Cambridge Enterprise, and, prior to that, at Imperial College Innovations, London. He is qualified as a solicitor, has completed his doctorate in biotechnology management focusing on bio-entrepreneurship, and has been trained in biomedical science.

Andrew Koehl, Co-Founder and President, Products

Andrew was Owlstone's founding CEO before moving into his role as President, Products in September 2005. He continues to share responsibility for Owlstone's day-to-day operations. Andrew is the inventor of the microchip spectrometer technology on which Owlstone has based its business, which he developed while a postgraduate at the University of Cambridge.

Dr Satyamoorthy Kabilan, Chief Technical Officer, Ver-Tec

Satyamoorthy Kabilan was one of the co-Founders of Smart Holograms, a company developing sensor hologram technology invented at Cambridge University. Having been a key part of the company’s progress in raising over £7 million in funding as well as securing and developing a number of key technology partnerships with global, leading companies, he has gained considerable experience in project managing major accounts, developing novel technology, fund raising and intellectual property management in addition to his broad scientific and technical knowledge.

He has published numerous articles and patents.

Satyamoorthy Kabilan obtained his BSc at Imperial College, London and his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He is a Chartered Biologist and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Chartered Management Institute.
